Cerebrovascular Accidents (CVA) disorders Rank 3rd in the Causation of Morbidity after Ischaemic Heart Disease and Malignancies.They occur commonly in elderly individuals or may be Stroke in young.

In developing Countries Like INDIA, Stroke is Common in Individuals Below 45 years of age. In India, Young adults constitute 20-40% of all stroke patients while in the West where the incidence is only 5%.

Cerebrovascular Accident or Stroke is defined as abrupt onset Neurological Disorder of Vascular Aetiology.

Stroke in young in India constitute 20-40% of all strokes in comparison to only 5% in the west.This could be possibly be due to the age Structure of the population or Due to Preponderance of Risk Factors like Infection, Rheumatic Heart Disease  and use of Oral Contraceptives.

  • In other parts of the world Ischaemic Stroke predominates over Intacerebral Haemorrhage.
  • The Stroke Cases are Expected to Rise in Epidemic Proportions in  INDIA in the near Future.
  • Public Education with Risk factor Modification is the most appropriate strategy to control this problem in INDIA.

Strokes is the Sudden Loss of Neurological Functions due to Restricted Blood Supply to the Brain which may also lead to Death with no apparent cause than the Vascular Origin.

Stroke in Young ; 2 Types of Stroke: Ischemic & Haemorrhagic Stroke

  • Ischemic Strokes 

Ischemic Strokes Occurs in the Absence of Oxygen leading to Infarction (Attack).This the the Impairment of Blood Supply to part of Brain Resulting Initially in Dysfunction and then Tissue Death.

The common causes of Ischeamic stroke in young adults are :

  • Premature Artherosclerosis
  • Cardioembolic Stroke
  • Hyperlipidaemia
  • Infections like Tuberculosis & Migraine
  • Use of Oral Contraceptives
  • Pregnancy Related Stages
  • Haematological Disorders
  • Migraine and use of Oral Contraceptives are the most common causes of Strokes in young adults.

  • Haemorrhagic Strokes

This is Usually Intracerebral Haemorrhage but can be Subarachnoid Haemorrhage. Both types of Haemorrhages Described in Next Page .

Note: Of all Strokes, 88% are Ischaemic & 12% are Haemorrhagic in Nature. Of the Haemorrhagic stroke , 9% are due to an Intracerebral Haemorrhage, and 3% are dre to a Subarachnoid Haemorrhage.

Stroke in Young ; Types of Ischemic Strokes(88%):

  1. Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIA)
  2. Reversible Ischaemic Neurological Deficit (RIND)-Ischaemic Neurological Deficit Lasting for 24-96 Hours.
  3. Lacunar Infarcts

In Addition,Multifocal small Infarcts or ischaemia may result in Slowly Progressive Neurological Disorders,causing multi-infarct Dementia and Subcortical Arteriosclerotic Encephalopathy (Binswanger’s Disease).
